House Rats:
What to Look For and How to Identify an Infestation.
RATS
House Rats are small animals with strong bodies, short limbs and long tails. House Rats are the largest group of mammals.
Signs of a Rat Infestation
Droppings: One of the most obvious signs of a rat problem is the presence of droppings. Rat droppings are small, dark, and cylindrical, typically found near food sources, along baseboards, or in hidden corners. Fresh droppings are soft and dark, while older ones are hard and lighter in color.
Gnaw Marks: Rats have strong teeth that grow continuously, so they need to gnaw on various materials to keep them in check. You might notice gnaw marks on wood, plastic, wires, or even food packaging. Rats can cause significant damage to electrical wiring, posing a fire hazard.
Noises: Rats are nocturnal creatures, so you’re more likely to hear them at night. Listen for scratching, scurrying, or squeaking sounds coming from walls, ceilings, or attics. These noises indicate that rats are active and moving around your home.
Nesting Materials: Rats build nests using soft materials like shredded paper, fabric, or insulation. You may find these nests in hidden areas such as behind walls, in attics, or under floors.
Grease Marks: As rats move through your home, they leave behind greasy smudges along walls or baseboards, caused by their oily fur rubbing against surfaces.
